we’re in the demo lab with Lonnie and
I’ve asked him to set up a spectroscopy experiment he’s chosen to use mercury
excited by an electric current that means high-energy electrons are dropping
down to lower energy states and emitting light now the light appears to be white
until you pass it through this grating and that separates it into its component
colors you can see on the screen which is half florescent and half standard
that there’s five lines and on the fluorescent portion of the screen you
can see that some of the emission lines are in the ultraviolet they appear only
on the fluorescent portion of the screen so five lines from the mercury spectrum
two of them in the ultraviolet
